How does your garden grow, IronMan and the 4th of July!

So much has happened since the last time I did a blog post that I will try to minimize the writing by putting in lots of pictures!

Our garden has exploded into a forest of plants! Lovely green with a few splashes of color here and there. Due to the fall weather we are having in Seattle and the massive quantities of rain, I have a very green garden with a few flowers, a few ripening veggies and fruits. It's lovely to look at, but wish we could eat some things as well!! We finally harvested a huge amount of lettuce, some parsley and cilantro. This last week we finally harvested some sugar snap peas which are beyond fantastic to eat straight out of the garden! Not sure we'll have many to freeze due to the fact that we keep eating them. The potatoes have some flowers on the plants, the little onions are doing well and some are developing some nice looking bulbs; my flowers are starting to bloom, the tomatoes are covered in flowers and a few green tomatoes, the beans are starting to bloom and the corn and squash are ever taller and wider. Nick and I did eat a little cherry tomato that we divided into four pieces to split between us. =) The sun has finally arrived in Seattle this last week though and I'm praying it lasts for several weeks to help my tomatoes and everything else along towards blooming and ripening.

GARDEN UPDATE: We have had some glorious weeks of sunshine and warm temps and our garden has loved it. We've harvested enough peas that I was able to freeze a bag of them. We've harvested about 10 tomatoes, gallons of lettuce, 2 jars worth of dried parsley, lots of cilantro and the garden box is filled with flowers. We've even harvested some mini carrots. I also joined the league of canners and put up 4 pints of apricot jam and 6 half pints of triple berry jam (blueberry, strawberry and raspberry). Sarah and I had a great time putting those up. Next on the list is trying my hand at making/canning tomato sauce!

Our other big event was traveling to Spokane to cheer on my girlfriend (Nick's aunt), Connie, in her first IronMan event. It was amazing!!!! We had an awesome time "hunting" for her during the swim course, "chasing" her during the cycling portion and screaming our lungs out at the finish line for the run. In case you don't know, an IronMan is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. Woof... I'll let the pictures tell the story.

We celebrated the 4th of July in our usual fashion, but this time we decided to add an epic movie marathon event to the mix. We started watching Lord of the Rings on Saturday evening, made it until 2 a.m. and then resumed/completed the series on Sunday night. We did take a short break on Sunday evening to grill some asparagus and cook up some lovely black bean burgers; topped off by fresh cherries, strawberries and raspberries. Love summer fruit!!! We ended the night by blowing off a bunch of fireworks despite very cold temperatures and wind.

Lastly, we enjoyed a fantastic weekend (July 16-18) with our lovely friends going to the farmers market, the Mill Creek Fun Days Festival and seeing the movie Inception (go see it if you haven't already - it's awesome!!). It was great fun to take Aaron and Connie to their first time at the Gold Class Cinemas!

Nick and I are pounding out the last 2 days until we leave for California. We are traveling for my best friends wedding, with a little anniversary trip mixed in!

It's All Done!!

We finished the garden last week after I spent 4 hours shoveling about 4 cubic yards of pea gravel around our garden boxes. It looks fantastic and it's so much fun watching all the plants poke their heads up through the soil!!

Pretty much all of our plants are showing their leaves and some of our tomato plants even have fruit on them.

With the leftover rock that we have we plan to finish our two french drain trenches and fill in some low spots in our other rock areas.

I'll keep posting more updates on our garden as the growing season progresses!!

More To-Do...

Thought I'd put a few more things down that we did recently:

√ Build a greenhouse for our tomatoes that is fabulous, adorable and WORKS!

√ Car maintenance - oil, oil filter, air filter changes on both Jeeps; wash Jeeps; air up the tires; fix the spare on my Jeep.

√ Enjoy the start of spring/summer in Seattle, spending time with my hubby, seeing all the spring blockbusters at our favorite theater - Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinema, making summer travel plans and getting ready to celebrate our 10 year anniversary in August!

Cheers!!

To-Do List

It's been a horribly long time since I posted anything to our lovely blog and I apologize to the people who are interested in the happenings of our life! Life has been a whirlwind the last month and a half so rather than writing several pages worth of "blogage", I'm going to share my "t0-do list" that I managed to accomplish (with my handsome hubby's & wonderful friends' help) over the last 6 weeks...

√ Answer the siren call of California and spend 4 gorgeous days with my best friend, Miss Bear. The weather was gorgeous, the activities refreshing and relaxing and the company supreme!

√ Complete gardening project - involved staking out the area, rototilling, putting down pavers, finishing out a flowerbed, laying down weed mesh, building the gardening boxes, buying/mixing/placing compost in all the boxes, planting the seeds and starts and put down pea gravel (last step to complete).

√ Clean the house - that's been done a few times I'm thankful to say!

√ Grocery shopping - also done a few times.

√ Laundry - Nick is very happy this has been done a few times.

√ Ironing - least favorite thing to do, finally done today.

√ Order garden pea gravel - delivered next Monday, soooo excited!

√ Attend first market Saturday at Redmond Farmer's Market - flowers, pie, mustard and asparagus!

√ Have coffee with Miss Jessalyn and adorable little Kolbi!

√ Get Jack a much needed haircut with Tia at Tia's Doggy Spa. Best dog grooming spot in Washington state!

√ Get out and do some cycling - tried a new trail, Snohomish Centennial Trail and my legs still hurt. Gorgeous scenery, uphill the whole way north, but all downhill on the way back! Much less crowded then our regular trail ride, wider and feels safer despite the few crazy road crossings between overlapping gates. We will definitely be riding on this trail again!

√ BLOG!! Hope everyone enjoyed all the updates!

Sick Days...

  • Coughing
  • Jack looking at me with longing eyes that say, "Why aren't you taking me for a walk?"
  • Trash cans overflowing with Kleenex
  • Coughing
  • Watching TV programs and movies to the point of wanting to scream, "How do people become lifetime couch potatoes?!?"
  • Falling asleep while trying to read a book
  • More coughing
  • Gallons of orange juice, massive quantities of fresh oranges (thanks Mama!) and liters of water
  • Cheery yellow daffodils on my table
  • Still more coughing
  • Antibiotics
  • Sudafed
  • Nighttime Sudafed (even better)
  • Feeling like I might be able to go back to work tomorrow... while still coughing...

It's a love/hate thing...

  • I detest how late Nick works at night... I love that he trys so hard to come home, eat dinner together and work here where he's only 5 feet away from me!

  • I detest daylight savings time... I love all the spring flowers, that the light hangs in the sky so late at night and that the sun is tinging the horizon while I drive to work in the morning.

  • I detest exercising... I love the results I get when I do exercise, how good I feel and that it's so much nicer outside so I can ride outside instead of inside on a yucky trainer!

  • I detest watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and grapefruit... I love pomelo! For those who haven't heard of this divine fruit - the pomelo is a citrus fruit native to South East Asia. It is usually pale green to yellow when ripe, with sweet white (or, more rarely, pink or red) flesh and very thick pudgy rind. It is the largest citrus fruit, 15–25 cm in diameter and usually weighing 1–2 kg.

  • I don't have a "detest" for this one... I love getting together with friends to celebrate anything. In this case it is the soon arrival of Jessalyn's baby girl, Kolbi. The OPC girls got together for a tea party baby shower and had a delightful time!

  • I detest any and all pork products, the smell of bacon makes me want to hurl... I love veggie sausage links though! Along with some yummy hashbrown potatoes, eggs and some fruit of course.

  • I detest all of the work it is taking to put our garden together... I love the end result of hard work and effort!

  • See... you can always find a way to make lemonade out of lemons!

    Hair Today... Gone Tomorrow

18 inches for my sister... 14 inches for a friend of mine... 11 inches for me (22 if you put the braids end-to-end!)...

It took about a year and a half and at some point when Nick and I didn't have the money for me to get regular haircuts I decided it would be really fun to grow my hair out for the purpose of donating it. As time went on I decided that I really loved having my hair long and I became really attached to it. At the end of last year I made the commitment to stick with my original goal and go through with cutting my hair and donating it to Locks of Love.
With Lindsay's support and making the day a fun adventure, I spent 4 hours in Jodi's chair today at the Celsius Salon - being cut, colored and styled.

Lindsay and I treated ourselves to lunch at Kafe Neo when it was all said and done. While I'm a little traumatized by the drastic length change, I know it was for a great cause and my hair will grow back!
